I’ve been using Endless since April with absolute satisfaction as it came preinstalled on my new laptop.
These days I thought of playing some of my old favorite Windows-era games (like Age Of Empires 2, C&C: Red Alert 2, Stronghold etc.).
Unfortunately, Wine or any Windows emulator are not (yet) available for Endless. But I discovered that GNOME-Boxes (based on QEMU) are available.
So, I gave it a try:
And I Encountered the following problems.
-Only one hard drive is available for each virtual machine so it means I have to use ones with integrated bootdisk.
I tried Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME without any success.
-Because during the installation it must restart the computer, yet it means Boxes erases everything. (Taking Snapshots don’t help as it’s an installation process). The best thing I could achieve after reboot (of the virtual machine) was something like “No boot from hard disk”. Checked on other computed with QEMU this message shouldn’t come up. I tried to use the screenshot made by QEMU same message again.
The solutions I found were not usable due to Flatpak (Which is a big thumb up for its security ).
So here’s my problem and here are my questions:
*Are these I encountered bugs? If so, will they be fixed?
*Or was the problem with my Windows(es) (e.g. XP should work or my ISOs were not suitable)?
*Is there any other alternatives to enjoy these games again? (I know about their free alternatives like openRA and openAge but those are very far from their originals and still in development).
DOSBox can be installed in Endless. While I am not sure if one can run Win98 in DOSBox you can run Win95 in DOSbox. Win98 also runs on top of DOS, so I would guess that Win98 would work in DOSBox as well.
Thank you all I really appreciate the love and effort in put in your comments. It took me a while to get back here!
@LeandroStanger “Making FaltPaks” maybe it’s easy for some, but for a non-professional user it will not work. No compilng has ever worked for me on any computer (regardless of the current os which were Windowses and Linuxes as well). It’s for real die-hard professionals, it’s even impossible for immediate users with programming skills like my brother and me.
However, I would be glad, if someone helped me with this, or if there was an easy universal way to do it.
“Microsoft doesn’t support” this is absolutely irrelevant.
@wove “Win95 in DosBox” great ideal. I was the one requesting for DosBox. Yet I don’t think it would work. DosBox might be capable to run Win95. As I know Dos could only give Win95 the minimum requirements to run. I don’t think that this Win95 running on DosBox would give the necessary requirements to Even Age Of Empires.
Correct me if I’m mistaken.
@nicknick267 I like your question, thanks for asking it
Thank you very much for your comments. I’ll be glad to hear anything further on this issue as I want to make things work.
Have a nice day!
