Grub problem & kernel panic

Hello
My problem is that I cannot log into Endless OS and I would like to know how could I restore its grub.
Background:

  1. I installed Endless OS alongside Windows and also a few Linux partitions on the same drive (ssd).
  2. The Endless grub was deleted after running the Cloudready Chromium OS on a USB stick. I didn’t try to install Cloudready, it simply deleted my Linux and Endless grub, with the exception of Ubuntu grub. I installed rEFInd in Ubuntu, and then I could log into my Arch and Opensuse partitions, but not in Endless. In rEFInd I can see the Endless grub, but when I try to login, it gives me kernel panic.
  3. I tried to uninstall Endless OS inside Windows 10 without succes. The process end with an error. Is there any way to delete the Endless partition in Windows and then reinstall it? I observed that my user is not the owner of the Endless folder, so, its folder cannot be simply deleted. But I guess it would be a bad idea to try to delete it as administrator. I don’t know much about Windows systems (I know more about Linux), but I know that deleting a program, as opposed to uninstall it, is wrong.

So, what should I do? Right now, I don’t have a functional Endless OS and I cannot uninstall, reinstall or delete its partition. There has to be some way to restore its bootloader!

Hi there - sorry you’ve run into these problems! It sounds like the EFI entry for Endless has been removed or damaged by another OS. We made the Windows install/uninstall process very cautious so if anything isn’t as expected, it will stop rather than risk damaging the system.

Let’s figure out what’s going on:

  • Make sure you have the latest installer version 1.0.2.12 (you can check by right-clicking then going to Properties and looking in the Detail tab) or download it from endless-installer.exe
  • Run it - it should detect your existing Endless installation and show an “Uninstall” button. Click that.
  • Let us know how it goes. If it fails, there should be an EndlessInstallerXXXXXX.log file in the same folder as the endless-installer.exe - share the log with us here and we’ll see what’s happening.

Thanks!
Rob

(oh, also if you can take a photo of the kernel panic using your smartphone and attach it here, I’d be curious to know what’s happening in this case)

Thank you, Rob. The endless-installer.exe didn’t work. Exactely as the uninstaller from the windows, running it resulted in an error with a .log file. But thanks to my linux experience, I figured that maybe I need a privileged acces in Windows, similar to the Linux root account. So, I logged into the administrator account (there are some tutorials on the internet, for who might need it, in a similar situation) and tried to uninstall Endless, again, which didn’t succeed, but then I changed the Endless folder permissions. I gave unlimited permissions to Admin (and my user, just in case), and deleted the Endless folder.
I was afraid that in this way I could bork my Windows, but it didn’t happen anything wrong, till now. And the next move is to reinstall my Endless OS.

Thank you for support.
PS I know that simply deleting a program - and Endless seem to work as a program in Windows - is not the recommended way to uninstall it. So, my advise is to use this method only in the last resort.

Hmm, that’s funny. It should fail if you run it without administrative access. This may be a bug. Please share the log file from both cases with us, there was obviously a bug with the uninstall process which we want to fix for everyone. And there is maybe another bug with running under a non-administrator account.

NOTE FOR OTHERS: NEVER ERASE YOUR C:\endless FOLDER AS IT CAN MAKE YOUR COMPUTER UNBOOTABLE. CONTACT ENDLESS FOR SUPPORT IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE UNINSTALL PROCESS.

(You are lucky because you had already set your bootloader to something else. If your bootloader is still set to Endless grub, removing c:\endless means your computer won’t boot.)

Hi there, we need the log files from when you tried to uninstall and ran into problems - this is a log of the program being launched and then closed, so it doesn’t tell us much! If you have multiple logs you can attach them using the Upload button in the formatting toolbar.

This was a .log file after failing to uninstall with the endless-installer (I have a few other similar .log files from different attempts). I don’t have anymore the .log resulted from the uninstall command inside the windows endless partition.
As I said, I deleted the Endless folder as Admin, not within my user. I tried to delete it without Admin privilege, but you simply cannot do that, because you don’t have enough privilege on the folder and you also cannot change the folder permissions.
I have a separate efi partition where I have the Windows bootloader, along with different linux grub bootloaders.

This is not a log file from an uninstall attempt so maybe you have them mixed up. If you send us all the log files you have, we can see if any of them explain any of the problems you’ve run in to.

(Unless you’re trying to say the problem is you saw an Install button instead of an Uninstall button?)

Do you have a URL for the “Cloudready Chromium OS” USB stick which apparently deleted your Endless boot entries? It seems like that is the root cause of your problems. It would be interesting to understand what changes it made to your boot configuration.

As Rob says, our uninstaller errs on the side of caution if the boot configuration has changed from what our installer configured.

I have recovered the .log files from the recycle bin and indeed, they are mixed up. I tried to upload a .log file, but it only accepts image formats.

We’ll see if we can get the configuration for this forum changed to allow attaching log files – in the meantime, you could paste the log to a pastebin like https://paste.fedoraproject.org/ ?

Ok. I have a few logs: http://paste.fedoraproject.org/445419/14758325/
http://paste.fedoraproject.org/445420/58327061/

Nope, I don’t have any .log file or similar data for what happened with the Cloudready crash. I’m talking about the newerware version of ChromiumOS: https://www.neverware.com/#introtext-3 (I downloaded the free version). It’s possible, though, that ChromiumOS deleted the bootloaders because I executed a forced turn off (I lost my patience waiting for it) pushing the physical button on my laptop.

Thanks for the information! This log shows our uninstaller trying and failing to remove it own boot entry, and giving up. This is consistent with Cloudready messing up your EFI boot entries!

All we can really do if that happens is provide tools to repair the boot entries, and perhaps make the uninstallation process a bit more tolerant of this situation. EFI systems are a bit easier in this respect, it’s harder to make the system completely unbootable. I’ll file some tickets internally, and try to find some time to investigate what happened with Cloudready…

I have a suggestion: try to give the user more control over the system. I know, you built Endless OS as a foolproof Linux OS, and to achieve this you limited users area of action inside the OS. But it feels strange to have a linux system hidden in a “black hole” inside Windows, without the posibility to acces its files from outside. I saved some Linux installations using GParted, or chroot, or simply editing some of its system files from another linux OS. And in this way, you could also repair its grub from another linux partition.
It’s only an idea. I understand what the devs of the Endless OS aim at and it’s really a fresh air in the Linux world.
