I’m having a boot failure with Endless OS and would appreciate guidance on recovery or rollback.
System context
- Endless OS (version pending confirmation)
- Dual-boot system with Windows
- Windows boots and runs normally
- Hardware appears healthy
What happened (timeline)
- While using Endless OS, Firefox crashed.
- Since the computer hadn’t been used for a fe weeks, I decided to reboot the system normally via EOS options for rebooting.
- During boot, I saw the following errors on screen (image attached):
[FAILED] Failed to start plymouth-start.service - Show Plymouth Boot Screen.
[FAILED] Failed to start eos-image-boot-setup.service - EndlessOS image boot filesystem setup.
- After waiting with no progress, I performed a hard power-off (held the power button for ~10 seconds).
- On the next boot attempt after choosing Endless OS from the available OSs menu, Endless OS no longer starts and immediately shows:
KERNEL PANIC
Please reboot your computer
No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
See Linux Documentation/admin-guide/init
Since then, the system consistently panics at boot and does not reach a login screen or recovery UI.
Additional notes
- This machine dual-boots with Windows, which continues to work without any issues.
Questions
- Is there a way to roll back to a previous Endless OS deployment?
- If reinstalling is required, How may I recover all my files related to the current EOS install, accessing them from Windows on the same computer?
Any guidance on recovery steps, rollback, or diagnostics would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
