Specifically, it is a configuration interface, since modern hardware supports WiFi Direct.
I tend to be an advocate of bluetooth connections, but Wifi Direct is much simpler to configure, the connection is stable and much wider. Most consumer devices support the specification from smartphones to smart-tv, so it would be ideal to easily configure this type of connection in Endless devices.
I see that in the GNOME wiki there is a draft on the subject, but I doubt it is a priority (the same for the WPS support recently added to NetworkManager).
