Beta Release | Endless OS 3.9.0~beta3

The third beta release of Endless OS 3.9.0 is out. Please follow these instructions if you want to join the beta testing program; bear in mind that the chance of encountering bugs is higher than in a regular stable release. As always, please ensure your data is backed up!

This release builds on top of 3.9.0~beta2 and includes extra bug fixes and polishing.

Can not roll back to the stable version. Reboot does not help.

You can’t. If you switch from Beta to Release channel via

pkexec eos-stage-ostree prod

you will get the next stable version once it’s released and stay on the release channel.

Generally, for rolling back:

There are always two versions of the operating system kept: The one you currently run and the previous deployment. So, for example, if you switched to Beta channel and got 3.9.0~beta2, you have:

  • 3.8.7 (previous, stable)
  • 3.9.0~beta2 (current, beta)

Now, if 3.9.0~beta3 comes out and your machine gets updated to it, you have:

  • 3.9.0~beta2 (previous, beta)
  • 3.9.0~beta3 (current, beta)

In this situation, you are stuck with either one of the above.

Can you please give us a hint about the kernel version which will be used in 3.9.0? As it seems, 5.8.0 has some serious issues regarding Bluetooth:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/stable-queue.git/tree/queue-5.8/bluetooth-fix-update-of-connection-state-in-hci_encr.patch?id=ffef311ce35f8dac2d74d20b69a18530d87d6401

This bug prevents many new devices from correctly pairing. Devices which are already paired in 3.8.7 (and whose LinkKeys are already stored under /var/lib/bluetooth) are not affected.

I did intensive testing with many different Bluetooth HID and A2DP devices. All pair without issue in 3.8.7 and are still working in 3.9.0~beta3 when doing the upgrade. But as soon as the connection is removed, the device will no longer pair again, not matter what.

Thanks for pointing it out! This was on our radar already, and the fix will be included in EOS 3.9.0.
